Review

This book (Polar Boy) is about a young boy named lluak and a Polar Bear.

The main characters are Iluak, Finn, Miki, Nana and Grandpa. When Iluak fell in the ice cold water he almost got eaten by a seal then a raven came past. Iluak realised that if a raven comes flying past it means you might die but when he got out of the ice cold water he was getting all the treatment that he needed. Finn treats Miki like a sister.

After Iluak got all the treatment he needed he went for a walk and on that walk Iluak noticed that something was lying down on the ice. So when he got a bit closer he noticed that it a was a sick polar bear. They just left the bear alone. Then they go fishing for seal and bow headed whales for something to eat.

To conclude the chapters were a bit lengthy and boring I would of enjoyed this book if there was more exciting events in the chapters. For example if they speared something  that wasn’t a seal. I give this book a 8/10!

Polar Boy

Review: by Sandy Fussell.

In the book Polar Boy a small boy named Iluak is afraid of whiter things, by this I mean polar bears.

Iluak is big a coward, nothing like his grandfather. His grandfather is not afraid of anything. Iluak finds himself getting nothing but bad luck. He is almost eaten by a seal and sees a raven which is known as the bird of death. Throughout this book he finds himself getting stalked by the raven.

In the middle of this story Iluak’s family finds a sick polar bear cub in a cave by itself. So they took the cub back to the igloo to heal it.

Getting to the end of the book Miki and her friend went into the snow. Then they see a polar bear, Iluak’s worst fear. Miki runs for help but her friend stayed in shock.

So when she got back she panicked and went looking for her. Iluak knew he had to step up and face his fears. He starts looking for the girl even if it means risking his life.

In the end they found the girl and Iluak faces his fears of whiter things. They heal the cub and let it go to its polar bear parent while Finn and Iluak go to Greenland to study hunting.

This book is great for kids from 8-13. If you like a book about polar bears and fears being conquered this is the book for you. Sandy Fussell has done great job and I can not wait to read one of her other books. I give this book a 7/ 10.

Year 5 Leadership Day

"A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. In the end, leaders are much like eagles...they don't flock, you find them one at a time."

Commencing Week 6 new students and parents were invited to attend the transition to school program which runs for 3 weeks. These occur in the morning. During this time the new students meet their buddies (Year 5 students) and spend time in the kindergarten rooms. This you could say is the beginning of the Year 5 Leadership program.
Today the Year 5 children participated in a Leadership Day led by East Maitland Parish Youth Team. They discussed the qualities of a leader, participated in dramas and worked cooperatively to complete tasks, they stepped out of their comfort zones and looked towards 2012.
Below is a selection of photos taken from the Year 5 Leadership Day.

A Dog Like No Other

What is bloat?
Bloat is when a dog gets a disease that comes in their stomach when they become overstretched by an excessive gas that makes them very ill in many ways and sometimes does not cure.
Other ailments
Another thing that is a serious condition for dogs is flees because fleas carry a disease that is named anemia that makes them dizzy/sick. By Corey

Marley

What is Marley scared of how and does he act when he is afraid?

Well firstly Marley is terrified of thunder and lightning. One time when John and Jenny went out for a nice dinner with the kids, they were trying out how Marley would go at home by himself. When they got home they realised it was an absolute disaster; it was a disaster because when they got home I think Marley had worried in stress and there was blood everywhere.

John went out and brought the biggest cage because Marley is so naughty, they found a lion cage in the pet shop it was supposed to be for a lion but John and Jenny think he is a lion so they tested it with another family dinner. Before they went out they put a bone in the cage and Marley went straight in. So they thought they had striked it right…..but when they came home Marley had ate the wire so he was waiting at the back door for them to arrive home.

I will now list something’s dogs are scared of:
Fireworks
Storms
Thunder
Loud noises

String Games

Hi, my name is Ashleigh and my name is Olivia.

This term we have been reading the book Polar Boy by Sandy Fussel.

An activity we have been learning is string games, which Inuit kids play.

Here is some demonstrations that we have been practising.

Marley- Embarrassing Mishaps

Marley
The most embarrassing mishap that Marley has done would have to be when he was left alone at home. When John and Jenny got back they walked in and cotton literally fell on them because Marley had been chewing on the sofa and the curtains. They could not find Marley and when they eventually found him he was under his bed with his paws over his eyes.

My Dog Diesel
One time my dog ripped my sofa up when he was just 7 weeks old, and we had to chuck it out. Now that’s a bad dog, but he is not always like that. There is also the time when he bit me and l bleed very badly but he was only mucking around.

The end of term has come and holidays are here. Five White you are an exceptionally talented group of young children. You make it a pleasure for me to come to school each day (except for when you interupt my sleep at camp by knocking on my window). I wish you all a happy and safe holiday. x
Here is one of my favourite poems for you to read along with my creative photography. :-)
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there was one only.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from anguish,
sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,
so I said to the Lord,
“ You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there has only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
The Lord replied,
“ The years when you have seen only one set of footprints,
my child, is when I carried you.”

The Year 5 children  recently visited the Great Aussie Bush Camp for 3 days. They had a fantastic time, they all stepped out of their comfort zone by participating in a selection of fun activities. It was a camp to remember!
Throat-singing

Throat singing is a type of singing mostly native to Tibet, Mongolia, Tuva, North America and surrounding regions.

Throat singing is mostly done by 2 women (nowadays men perform as well) standing face to face. They try to out do there partner by tone, voice and volume, This determines who wins the battle.

Throat singing is not singing as such, as in they do not sing like Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus. Ethnomusicologists (the study of social and cultural aspects of music and dance in local and global contexts) say that it is more of a breathing game or a voice game. Only because of the way they use their throat, voice, deep breathy sounds and also rhythm. Women played this as a game on winter nights to entertain the children.
Even through throat singing is not what I would call my cup of tea, I think throat singing would be a great thing to try and for people to do.

Marley
Obedience training is when an instructor teaches a dog to obey orders, be a good dog and teaches them to not rip or break things.

John and Jenny decided to take Marley to obedience training because he would usually get hyped up or tear things or even break things and most of all he jumped a lot! The results of Marley going to obedience training were excellent he came back not tearing things and not breaking things.
Marley can be awfully a lot like my dog Diesel, he does tend to misbehave. Like the time he tore a hole lounge into bits! Also, once he broke his chain, may l mention it was a metal chain and he broke it while we were on a walk and we had to chase him ten blocks. Now that’s misbehaving.

Focus on Reading

In 5W we use many different Teaching ideas, these are the activities and practices that teachers use with students to help them learn how to use comprehension strategies. Here, we have just finished the 'Weave a Web of Understanding' Teaching idea which teaches the comprehension strategy of summarising.

This is a fun way to conclude a lesson.

Balinese Culture

Batik is a cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Batik or fabrics with the traditional batik patterns are found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Singapore. This week 5W used flour and water instead of wax to create a similar effect. The children enjoyed this art technique and the finished product will remain a cherished artifact of their Year 5 schooling for many years.

Communication

In Science and Technology this term 5W have been studying Communications. Even though every satellite has a different use, there are certain elements of all satellites that are the same. In small groups the children enjoyed making and labelling their satellite.

Don't they look absolutly fantastic!

Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to Hollie, Indianna, Lochlan, Mitchell and Ashlee who competed in the Cross Country Championships at Tarro Reserve on Tuesday 17th May. All these children ran a fine race achieving terrific times. The course consisted of open country and small hills. Our day started off chilly but the sunshine soon warmed us up.

A very special congratulations goes to Lochlan who came 5th in his age group. What a champion effort!
Lochlan will now be representing our Diocese at the Polding trials at Eastern Creek in coming weeks.
